Only The Little People Pay Their Bills

Sen.  Clinton is running as the champion of the working class. In OH, PA and ID the base that is energized for her is the ordinary worker: the waitress in a diner, the caterer, the florist. The Clinton campaign started out with a few fatcat donors. After the first time it went broke, money flowed in from hundreds of thousands of ordinary folk, fired up over the promise of her candidacy to fight for them.

So how well is the Clinton campaign treating the folks who work for them? The Chief Strategist Mark Penn-you know,  the guy that pops up from time to call some state or Democratic leader `not significant'- is being paid $2.7 million dollars since January. Nice paycheck if you can get it. Howard Wolfson, the spokesman is paid $237000 a month: that is $1300 an hour, making him the Three Diamond Man of the campaign. Is it any surprise that the Clinton campaign is broke again?

It is not paying its bills. The Politico reports:

She owed Iowa's Sioux City Art Center Board of Trustees $3,500 for catering and venue costs, New Hampshire's Winnacunnet Cooperative School District $4,400 in event costs, Qwest $24,000 for phone service, various branches of the Iowa-based supermarket chain Hy-Vee $15,000 for food, beverages and catering, and $7,700 to Ohio and Massachusetts branches of the theatrical stage employees' union, for equipment costs.

I suppose the logic is that Sen. Clinton becoming President is the best thing that could happen to these folks. And they want to get paid for their work too? These are not isolated incidents:

In fact, about a third of the nearly 700 individual debts Clinton reported at the end of February were for various types of "event expenses," including $319,000 for catering and venue costs, $420,000 for equipment, $11,000 for photography and $9,000 for security.

Deadbeat is not what the name that should stick to you when running for President. Among other things, the President oversees the IRS, HUD and FEMA. You want someone in the job who truly does care about the ordinary worker, and not just look at them as a source of campaign contributions.

And word is getting around that Clinton's campaign does not promptly pay those who labor to make her events look good, said an employee of the event production company Forty Two of Youngstown, Ohio.

"I feel insulted by the way that the campaign treated this company and treated us personally," said the employee, who did not want to be named talking about a client.

The Clinton campaign paid the company $16,500 to set up a stage, press riser, sound system and backdrops at a Youngstown high school last month for a raucous union rally, where an aggressive Clinton stump speech drew thunderous applause. But the Clinton campaign has yet to pay Forty Two for two other February events, and the employee said the campaign has stopped returning phone calls, e-mails and didn't respond to a certified letter.

Aren't all politicians the same? Don't they all do it? Why pick on the Clinton campaign? Actually everyone does not do it:

Forty Two also has done events for Obama's campaign, which has paid its bills promptly, according to the employee. FEC records show Obama's campaign paid the company $18,500.

May be that is because Obama has spent his money more wisely? Wolfson's counterpart in the Obama campaign is paid $12,000. Not bad, but certainly not worth a Diamond Rating either.

The dire financial situation must explain the tone of the latest fundraising letter from Sen. Clinton

Contribute $5 today to help us raise $3 million by the March filing deadline at midnight Monday.

At times like this, with everything on the line, it means so much to me to know that I can rely on you to meet the challenges we face head-on.

It means so much to know where the money is going.

To be fair it must be pointed out that among the people owed money are Mark Penn and Wolfson. How about a fundraiser on their behalf:

It is  time to dig deep and send in $100; we will take it in $5 installments a day. Remember a $100 buys five minutes of Howard Wolfson's time. He has not been paid in a while, so your urgent action is needed. I know I can count you.

See, this is another thing I don't care for about the Hillary campaign.

What is so difficult about paying your bills when you're bringing in tens of millions of dollars?? It shows that 1, her campaign is irresponsible and 2. its disrespectful to those companies who provided services.

She is worth at least $50 million dollars (none / 0)

Including her husband's wealth of course. Why not pay the caterer the few thousand out of her own money?

Hillary isn't that stupid. at this point Hillary and  Bill will never put more of their own money into this.

they will raise it from donors, but they know the truth, they won't put another $5 million that they possibly won't get back

lol that reminds me, when she donated the $5 million the first time, it showed how dedicated she was, well now her campaign is basically in the red, why doesn't she do it again?

is she not dedicated anymore?

Let us start a collection to pay her caterer. (none / 0)

If Sen. Clinton won't do it, let us do it. Any one wants to go in on this?

Re: Let us start a collection to pay her caterer. (2.00 / 1)

nope, it sucks for the business but if we raised the money to pay off her bills, she would claim a moral victory (this is Hillary Clinton people)

instead, SHE should pay her or her supporters should be the ones talking about raising money to pay it off, not Obama supporters.

Her supporters don't even address it at all, they are in a state of denial, so let them see the news reports of her cash status, and let them see how she is hurting some of these smaller business and then come to me and say she is fighting for the little guy.

BUT, if heaven forbids she drops out and doesn't pay, THEN I think Obama and his supporters should step up and pay it.

but for now Hilary and her supporters can deal with the consequences of their choices, they are enablers, instead of pressuring her to PAY these bills they turn a blind eye.

When Hillary acts up in the White House is this what we have to look forward to? a bunch of enablers who won't admit an Administration is wrong?

wonder where we have seen that!

and yes the more comparabilities between her campaign and the current administration are starting to make me worry. more and more it Seems Hillary would be a Democratic Verison of Bush.

at least she'd know more, but she still does the same thing of Loyalty to the President over Loyalty to the people.

Re: Only The Little People Pay Their Bills (none / 0)

I've been thinking....maybe it would be a good PR stint if the Obama campaign offered to match donations made to pay these peoples outstanding bills.

I'm not suggesting Obama owes these people his money..all indications are that his campaign pays his bills. But solely for a PR standpoint.

That would be entertaining... (none / 0)

...but it would be seen as patronizing Clinton, and the last thing we need is a male candidate suggesting that a female candidate not worry her pretty little head about it because he was going to take care of it.

What is most likely going to happen is that Clinton will, at some point, see the writing on the wall and withdraw from the campaign (shortly after PA, I'm guessing), but before she announces anything, she'll go on a fundraising jag and pull in the money she needs to finish in the black, including her own loan (plus interest, if she's really canny).  That shouldn't be too difficult, with the numbers she's been pulling.  The remainder of her war chest will either await her next Senatorial bid or will be donated to the DNC as a sign that she really didn't mean all that stuff about McCain being more qualified to be president than Obama.

Obama does not need to be involved (none / 0)

I think it is hugely unfair that the caterer is not getting paid; especially so because the expectation would have been that Sen. Clinton is a wealthy woman, so why wouldn't she pay a bill of  a few thousand dollars?

I think it would be best to do this as a direct humanitarian gesture, a show of support for the working person. Sen. Obama does not owe Sen. Clinton's contractors anything. But we as ordinary Americans can step in and help out a fellow citizen who is being taken advantage of. This sort of injustice should have no place in American politics.

We could start a website, asking all the vendors in OH,PA, ID, NC who have not been paid by Sen. Clinton to step forward. We could have pictures of them up and their stories. All proceeds from the website would towards paying those good folks what they are owed. This would be My  Direct Democracy.

Sen. Obama and his campaign does not need to be involved in it at all.
